Health Products Stewardship Association -

(Theme 6 – Natural Capital, Theme 7 – Waste, Theme 8 – Health)

Organization: Health Products Stewardship Association (HPSA)

Timeline for Completion: Formed 1999 Ongoing

Health Products Stewardship Association is a not-for-profit association formed in 1999 under the British Columbia extra-provincial Society Act and registered with Industry Canada since 2000. HPSA’s mandate is to perform, on behalf of each steward, certain duties required under provincial regulations.

Ontario Medications Return Program (OMRP)
OMRP covers all prescription drugs, medications such as over-the-counter medications, including topical antibiotic and antifungal creams and natural health products that are orally ingested, such as vitamins and minerals, traditional Chinese medicines, herbal products, probiotics, amino acids, homeopathic medicines and the like are also included.

Most pharmacies have already been collecting expired or unused medications. With this program even more pharmacies will participate, making it easier than ever before for you to do the right thing.

Urging consumers to take a closer look at their water use habits, the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) and the Clean Water Foundation (CWF) – in conjunction with The Regional Municipality of York Region, the Region of Peel and the Health Products Stewardship Association, launch the I don’t flush public awareness campaign. The campaign asks the public to return their unused/unwanted medications back to the pharmacy as opposed to flushing them down the toilet or drain, or throwing them in the garbage.

Stakeholders for the Medications Return Programs
1.Public – Purchases and consumes health products and returns any unused medications and natural health products to participating pharmacies.
2.Pharmacists – Provide pharmaceuticals for purchase and collect any unused medications returned by the public.
3.Stewards – Brand-owners or, if not applicable, first importers of affected products and members .

All stakeholders are connected by their interest in protecting your health and the environment.
